I’ve been writing a testimonial in my head for quite some time now.
There are so many things I wish to say and I want to make sure that my thoughts are organized and clear.
I will start with background information on me. I’m 58 years old, soon to be 59. I am a
female who is post menopause, sits at a desk all day (sometimes stands), had become
a little ‘soft’ and feeling the effects of gravity. I also was heading to my highest weight
ever.
My diet was fairly ‘clean’ as I put my Hashimoto’s (autoimmune) into remission 3 years
ago after removing gluten, addressing lingering viruses (EBV) and proper
supplementation. My challenge was sweets and snacking (which was leading to my
‘highest weight ever’)
I enjoy an active lifestyle and I like to ride horses, go for long walks and because my
mother is 93, I want to be able to be strong and self-sufficient like her.
I have worked with personal trainers in the past (first time when I was 18), but never
‘stuck’ to any routine or habit. My weight fluctuated about 20 pounds most of my adult
life. Not bad, but on a short (5’4”) frame, 20 pounds is uncomfortable.
My experience with trainers was all over the board. Some pushed me to where I
couldn’t wash my hair or walk down steps for a few days – muscles were completely
overworked – and it was hard to get up the courage to go through that again. Others
were indifferent to my goals, or we ended up talking more than training. Each time I
started, I always said “how long will it take to “get stronger”, “see muscles”, “have a flat
stomach”, etc. I was always focused on a timeline. And, when I didn’t achieve
‘success’ in that ‘timeline’, I quit. The cycle would then continue again, and again,
because I set a “goal” with an expectation of what was suppose to happen when and
when it didn’t, I gave up. The trainers I worked with didn’t discuss nutrition, macros or
diet and eventually, I stopped all together.
About 3 years ago, I was looking for a personal trainer (again) to come to my home as I
thought I needed a physical, onsite person to help me. I didn’t feel I had enough mental
discipline to go through weight training on my own. Alex reached out and responded to
my post. We had a nice conversation, I liked him a lot, but when he told me he our
training would not be in person and the cost, I said thank you, but no. He sent me some
reading materials and made some recommendations and that was that.
Fast forward 3 years….
I remembered Alex and his kindness and it stuck with me. I kept thinking about his
methodology and what we talked about. I was so very hesitant to invest (in myself!)!
Meanwhile, I have no problem spending money on much less important items!
As I was ‘floundering’ around with this weight, gravity, softness, I finally had enough.
Everyone’s ‘rock bottom’ moment happens in some way, shape or form and we all know
when we hit it. Mine was February 2025. I was buying bigger and bigger pants, I was
uncomfortable in my movements and I did not like the way I looked. I thought, if not
now, when?
I reached out to Alex and he remembered me! In a real way, not just words. He
referenced specific things we chatted about long ago. I decided to invest in month to
month sessions as he’s not cheap.
On March 3, we began our journey together. It is now November. I cannot imagine life
without Alex. My most transformative moment was in June. We were having one of our
bi-weekly conversations and I ripped up my calendar that I was keeping track of the
‘timeline’ – how many weeks I was working out, when my workouts were, what I did, etc.
That act changed my way of thinking completely. There was no timeline, it didn’t matter
how long I was working out or what I was doing, because working out wasn’t for a
period of time nor did it have an end date. This was my life, same as waking up and
brushing my teeth. For the rest of my life, I would workout and be healthy. Period. No
more “how long until….”. When I accepted this, it was so very freeing. I am sad that
ads for training, exercising, etc. put a timeline on it “by summer”, “in 6 weeks”, etc. This,
I believe, sets people up for failure, because when your body doesn’t respond “by
summer’, “in 6 weeks”, you get discouraged and give up. I know. I’ve been there.
What makes Alex different? I think Alex makes Alex different. Yes, he provides an app
to log food, track workouts, etc., but that’s a tool, not the ‘goal’. (I love how he said to
me “tracking food is not the goal” when I told him I wanted to stop tracking food). (I did
because after 7 months, I felt in control of my macros and eating habits). He listens,
meets you where you are in the moment and knows when to push. Yes, I had to meet
him halfway, I am responsible for showing up, doing the work and being held
accountable. I feel this may be due to the cost, because he isn’t cheap. Did I say
that already?
Alex doesn’t ‘train’, he is a coach, cheerleader, mentor and a wonderful human. I
believe part of why I’m successful is because I don’t want to disappoint him. He is so
very genuine, you feel this from the start. I had the pleasure of meeting him in person
for a workout and it was such a memorable opportunity! He was just as awesome in
person as he is online.
So, where am I after 7 months? I’m down 15 pounds, firmer and stronger than I have
ever been. I can do three sets of 10 push ups (not on knees) and started doing pull ups
(among other miraculous feats ). I completely changed my mindset and enjoy the
time with my weights. The beginning was rough – first session I said to myself “I hate
lifting weights”. I recognized that this talk track was not going to be helpful, so I pivoted
and said “let’s do this”. I still ‘dread’ the Bulgarian squats, but at least I’m able to get
through them now!
Another transformation was that I started running. I was the person who bought the
“0.0” sticker for my car. There was no way I ever thought I would run. I tried once (hurt
my knees) and this wasn’t ever going to happen. Around July, after 4 months of weight
training (glutes, thighs, hammies) were stronger, I had the ‘urge’ to try running. Alex
had talked about his running goal and I thought, I want to try that! I bought the shoes
and started with 20 steps. My form was probably a mess, my insecurity high and I was
afraid of getting sore and not being able to workout with my weights. I started slowly,
used k-tape when I did get a bit sore and I just completed 100 miles of running. It’s
crazy! I actually love running. My training sessions are guided by Alex and we work on
runs that stay within certain heart rates, we work on distance (6 miles is my longest),
and speed intervals. The variety and being outside in nature are amazing.
Alex has provided reading materials that are inspirational and transformative. He
provides exercises (written) that are thought provoking and insightful. If you are willing,
Alex can help you achieve amazing results. Not just physically, but mentally as well.
We all know that this is more mental, than physical. The mind will give out before the
body does. If you are dedicated and committed to be the best you, I highly recommend
Alex Scott Cook. He can’t lift the weights or eat the food, that is on you. If you are
someone who likes to be held accountable, is willing to put in the work, talk about your
struggles and show up, you WILL see results…in the most unexpected places!
Alex is not just a trainer, he is a life coach that will help you be the best version of you.
Change your mind, change your body. Get rid of the timeline. Accept that this is
needed, required, and desired for a life of wellness. Go on the adventure – enjoy the
moments and enjoy the journey. There is no better feeling than after a workout or a run.
It’s a high only you can create. Get excited – start.
